As many as five cruise ships dock at Cozumel daily, yet it’s easy to escape the crowds on Cozumel’s untamed east side. Miles and miles of undeveloped beaches, plus Maya ruins, opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving (and even a submarine ride for those who don’t do either), a Maya learning center, and other attractions make it a great island to escape the crowds, explore its uninhabited interior or do absolutely nothing at all.

For more on Cozumel–and how it surprised me–see my article Kicking Back in Cozumel in gettingontravel.com:

Cozumel’s pristine east side has no hotels and hardly any restaurants
Punta Sur Eco Beach, with the Caribbean on one side and a lagoon with alligators on the other
Although not nearly as grand or beautiful as Tulum’s Maya Ruins, San Gervasio’s ruins are wonderfully less crowded
